A fixture is defined as an item of equipment, furnishing, or property that is physically attached to a building, structure, or piece of land in a permanent or semi-permanent manner, so that it becomes an integral part of the real property rather than a movable possession. Attachment is usually achieved through plumbing, wiring, bolting, screwing, cementing, or nailing, and the legal test of fixture status considers the method of attachment, the adaptation of the item to the property, and the intention for it to remain permanently. Common examples include toilets, sinks, bathtubs, radiators, hardwired lighting, and built-in wardrobes. In law and real estate, this classification is crucial: fixtures are treated as part of the real estate and pass automatically to the buyer when the property is sold, whereas movable personal property (chattels) remains with the seller. The word also has several extended meanings. In sports, a fixture is a match or event officially scheduled for a particular date and venue, published in a fixture list. Figuratively, a fixture is a person or thing so constantly and long established in a place that they seem permanent, as in "he is a fixture at the gym." In engineering and manufacturing, a fixture is a rigid device used to hold and position a workpiece during machining, welding, assembly, or inspection. In dentistry, a fixture is the titanium post implanted into the jawbone as the root of a dental implant. The word derives from the Latin "fixus," meaning fastened, and every sense shares the core concept of something firmly fixed in place, schedule, or role.
