House fixtures are items permanently attached to a home and its utility systems, and common examples span nearly every room. In the bathroom: toilets, washbasins and pedestal sinks, bathtubs, walk-in showers, shower enclosures, bidets, faucets or taps, towel radiators, and recessed medicine cabinets. In the kitchen: the sink unit, built-in cabinetry, countertops, range hoods, garbage disposals, plumbed-in dishwashers, and built-in ovens and cooktops. Lighting fixtures include ceiling lights, chandeliers, pendant lamps, wall sconces, recessed downlights, track lighting, porch lanterns, and exterior floodlights. Heating and utility fixtures include radiators, baseboard heaters, boilers, water heaters, wall-mounted air conditioning units, and central furnace systems. Other examples throughout the house include built-in wardrobes and fitted closet systems, fitted shelving, hardwired smoke detectors, doorbells, ceiling fans wired into household electricity, fireplace mantels and inserts, garage door openers that are hardwired in, stair railings and balustrades, and in some jurisdictions fitted carpets and glued-down flooring. Outdoors, fixtures include permanent sprinkler systems, exterior lighting, and pool equipment that is plumbed in. All of these share the defining qualities of a fixture: they are physically affixed to the structure or its systems, they are intended to remain permanently, and removing them requires tools and typically causes damage or alteration. Legally, house fixtures transfer to the buyer when the property is sold.
