A fixture exists to keep something securely and permanently positioned so that a useful function can happen at that fixed location. Consider each domain. In a house, fixtures are for delivering the core services of domestic life at permanent points: the toilet, sink, tub, and shower are for sanitation and hygiene; light fittings are for safe, stable illumination; radiators and boilers are for heating; fitted cabinets and wardrobes are for durable storage; and hardwired smoke detectors are for constant safety monitoring. Because these functions require connection to water, electricity, gas, or drainage, the items must be fixed in place, which is exactly why they are fixtures. In law and real estate, the fixture concept is for deciding ownership on sale: items classified as fixtures are for the buyer, since they are treated as part of the real property, ensuring a home remains functional when ownership changes hands. In manufacturing and engineering, a fixture is for holding a workpiece rigidly and precisely during drilling, milling, welding, assembly, or inspection; it is for achieving accuracy, interchangeability, speed, and operator safety by preventing movement while tools operate on the part. In sports, a fixture is for scheduling: it exists so that a match has an agreed date, time, and venue that everyone can plan around. In dentistry, the implant fixture is for anchoring an artificial tooth in the jawbone. Even figuratively, the phrase is for describing dependable constancy: a person who is a fixture is someone you can count on finding in a given place. In every sense, a fixture is for reliable, fixed placement in service of a function.
