Hmong culture observes numerous taboos (caj dab or cultural prohibitions) designed to maintain spiritual harmony and respect. Common taboos include speaking disrespectfully to or sitting higher than elders, stepping over a person's legs or food preparation items, whistling inside a home at night (which is believed to summon wandering spirits), disturbing household shrines without proper ritual permission, and breaking strict clan exogamy rules.
