In a sealed double-pane insulated glass unit, the Low-E coating is hermetically protected on the inside of the unit (either surface #2 facing the outdoor gap or surface #3 facing the indoor gap) to shield the delicate metallic layers from weather exposure and scratching. For aftermarket window films applied to existing glass, the film is always installed on the interior-facing room side of the glass.
