Is water or oil based Kilz better? Whether water or oil based Kilz is better depends on project needs. Water-based Kilz like Kilz 2 All-Purpose and Kilz 3 Premium offers low odor, easy soap and water cleanup, fast drying, low VOC, good for general priming, drywall, wood, masonry, and light to medium stains, suitable for most interior DIY jobs and for people sensitive to fumes. Oil-based Kilz like Kilz Original offers stronger stain and odor blocking for severe stains such as smoke, fire, water damage, nicotine, pet urine, and tannin bleed, better adhesion on some surfaces, and can be used interior and exterior, but has strong solvent odor that can linger 2 to 3 days, requires mineral spirits cleanup, higher VOC, and longer cure. So oil-based is better for heavy-duty stain and odor blocking, water-based is better for everyday convenience, low odor, and easy cleanup. For severe smoke or fire, oil-based is better, for general repaint and new drywall, water-based is sufficient and more user-friendly. Many pros keep both, using oil for worst areas and water for rest.
