Can you paint over mold with Kilz? You should not paint over mold with Kilz or any primer without first removing mold and fixing moisture source, as painting over active mold traps it, allows it to continue growing underneath, and does not solve health issue. Standard Kilz Original and Kilz 2 are not mold killing and not EPA registered to kill mold, though they may block stain. Kilz does make Kilz Mold and Mildew primer which is EPA registered to kill existing mold and mildew and prevent new growth, but still manufacturer recommends cleaning mold first with appropriate cleaner, removing damaged materials, and fixing leak or humidity. Proper process is to wear protection, contain area, clean mold with detergent, or use EPA approved mold remover, dry thoroughly, repair moisture source, then apply mold killing primer, then topcoat. Simply painting over mold with regular Kilz Original will cover stain temporarily but mold can bleed through, cause odor, and spread. For large mold areas over 10 square feet, EPA recommends professional remediation. So while Kilz has mold-specific product, you should not directly paint over active mold without remediation steps first.
