Can I use kilz on mold? You should not use standard Kilz like Kilz Original or Kilz 2 directly on active mold without first removing mold and fixing moisture source, as painting over mold traps it and does not kill it, allowing continued growth underneath and health risks. Kilz makes specific product Kilz Mold and Mildew primer that is EPA registered to kill existing mold and mildew and prevent new growth, but even with that product, manufacturer and EPA recommend first cleaning mold with detergent or EPA approved mold remover, removing badly damaged porous materials, drying thoroughly, and fixing leak or humidity problem causing mold. For small areas under 10 square feet, you can clean, dry, then prime with mold-killing primer, then topcoat. For larger areas, professional remediation is recommended. Standard Kilz Original and Kilz 2 are not mold killers, they may cover stain temporarily but mold can bleed through and spread. So you can use Kilz Mold and Mildew after proper cleaning, but not use regular Kilz as solution to mold problem without remediation steps first.
