Does Kilz remove odor? Kilz does not remove odor source by itself, but it seals and blocks odor from coming through, acting as odor blocker rather than odor remover. Kilz Original oil-based primer is very effective at blocking odors from smoke, fire damage, pet urine, cooking, and musty smells when applied over cleaned surface, sealing odor into substrate so it does not bleed through topcoat paint. Kilz 2 All-Purpose blocks light to medium odors, but not as strong as original for heavy odors. Kilz Restoration and Kilz Mold and Mildew have additional odor-blocking claims. However, proper process is to first remove source of odor, clean surface, fix moisture or smoke damage, then apply Kilz to seal residual odor that cleaning cannot remove. Simply painting over active source like mold or urine without cleaning will not remove odor permanently. So Kilz blocks odor from surface, does not eliminate odor in air like air purifier or enzymatic cleaner. For best results, clean, dry, then prime with Kilz, then topcoat. Oil-based and shellac-based primers are better odor blockers than water-based for severe odors, with shellac generally strongest.
