Manually igniting an oven should only be done for older gas ovens with standing pilots and is not recommended for modern gas ovens with electronic igniters due to safety risk of gas explosion. For older gas ovens with standing pilot light, to manually ignite: first, ensure kitchen well ventilated and no gas smell, turn oven knob to Off, wait 5 minutes for gas to clear. Second, locate pilot light at bottom back of oven under broiler drawer or inside oven at back, you will see small gas tube. Third, turn oven knob to Pilot and press and hold it, then use long lighter or match to light pilot, hold knob for 30 to 60 seconds until pilot stays lit, then turn knob to desired temperature. For modern gas ovens with electronic igniter, you should not manually ignite with match because gas valve only opens when igniter reaches correct temperature and draws enough current, if you use match, gas may accumulate and cause explosion. Instead, if modern gas oven will not ignite, check if igniter glows, if not, igniter has failed and needs replacement at 40 to 80 dollars. If you smell gas, turn off gas supply immediately, open windows, do not use flames or electrical switches, and call gas company or technician. Never use paper or short matches. Modern ovens have safety valve that prevents manual lighting.
