It is important to note that plumber tape cannot fix a leak on the body of an active pipe or a split fitting, as it is strictly designed as a thread sealant for threaded pipe connections. To fix a leak at a threaded joint using plumber tape, you must first shut off the main water supply and drain the lines. Unscrew the leaking joint, completely clean away any old tape or debris from the male and female threads, and inspect the fitting for cracks. Wrap new high-density plumber tape clockwise around the male threads three to six times, pulling firmly so it molds into the grooves. Finally, screw the fitting back together securely and turn the water back on to test for leaks.
