Plumber tape should never be used on connections that utilize rubber washers, O-rings, or compression rings to create a watertight seal, such as sink supply lines or garden hose couplings. In these joints, the seal is achieved through physical compression of the rubber washer, and adding tape can disrupt the fit and cause leaks. Furthermore, avoid using standard white water tape on gas lines, which require specialized yellow gas-rated tape, or on PVC slip joints that use washers. Forcing tape onto fittings where it does not belong can prevent components from tightening fully and compromise the structural integrity of the plumbing connection.
