Plumber tape can successfully stop or prevent leaks at threaded pipe joints, but it cannot stop a leak caused by a cracked pipe wall, rusted hole, or split fitting. Plumber tape is engineered strictly to act as a thread sealant and lubricant that fills microscopic spiral gaps between male and female pipe threads when tightened under pressure. If water is leaking from the middle of a pipe or through a fitting crack, wrapping tape around the outside will do nothing because internal water pressure will immediately push past the adhesive. Stopping structural leaks requires replacing the damaged pipe section, tightening loose compression nuts, or installing proper emergency repair clamps.
