Plumber tape effectively stops leaks when applied correctly to threaded pipe connections by filling the tiny gaps between mating threads to create a watertight barrier. However, it only works on threaded joints like shower arms, pipe nipples, and threaded valve connections where water might otherwise seep through the spiral thread paths. It cannot stop leaks originating from split pipes, rusted pinholes, or fittings that rely on rubber O-rings and washers rather than threaded seals. If applied to the wrong type of joint or used as an exterior patch over a damaged pipe, plumber tape will fail completely and allow water to continue escaping under pressure.
