Whether you actually need plumber tape, also known as PTFE or Teflon tape, depends entirely on the type of pipe fittings you are assembling. For tapered pipe threads, such as those found on metal or plastic threaded shower arms, water supply pipes, and certain nipple connections, plumber tape is absolutely essential because it acts as a deformable lubricant and thread sealant that prevents leaks under high water pressure. However, for compression fittings, union joints, and hoses that use rubber washers or O-rings to create a watertight seal, plumber tape is completely unnecessary and serves no functional purpose since the threads themselves do not carry the seal.
