You should never use plumbing tape on fittings that rely on rubber washers, O-rings, or flare connections to create a watertight seal, such as flexible supply hoses connected to faucets or toilets. In these configurations, the threads are only meant to hold the mechanical connection together, while the rubber seal stops the water; adding tape can interfere with proper seating and cause leaks. Additionally, avoid using standard white water tape on fuel or gas lines, as those applications require specialized yellow gas-rated tape. Using tape on compression fittings or unions is also incorrect and can distort the joint or prevent proper tightening.
