One barrel of crude oil is 42 US gallons, but it does not make 42 gallons of gasoline, because crude is refined into many products. On average in US refineries, one 42 gallon barrel of crude oil yields about 19 to 20 gallons of gasoline, about 45 percent of barrel. The rest becomes other products like diesel fuel about 11 to 12 gallons, jet fuel about 4 to 5 gallons, heating oil, asphalt, lubricants, and petrochemical feedstocks. Yield depends on crude type and refinery complexity, complex US refineries can produce more gasoline, up to 20 gallons, while simple refineries produce less. Modern refining processes like cracking convert heavier parts into gasoline. So from 42 gallon barrel, you get roughly 19.5 gallons gasoline, 12 gallons diesel, 4 gallons jet fuel, and remaining 6 to 7 gallons other products. So answer is about 19 to 20 gallons of gasoline per barrel of crude oil in US, not 42 gallons. This is why gasoline price is more than crude price divided by 42, because only half barrel becomes gasoline plus refining costs.
