Bed bugs multiply relatively quickly under favorable conditions of warmth and regular access to blood meals, though not as fast as some insects like fruit flies. A single mated female bed bug can lay 1 to 7 eggs per day and 200 to 500 eggs in her lifetime, laying eggs in cracks, crevices, mattress seams, and behind headboards. Eggs hatch in 6 to 10 days into nymphs that need a blood meal to molt through five nymph stages before becoming adults, which takes about 5 to 8 weeks under ideal temperatures of 70 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit with regular feeding. So from egg to adult can be as little as 5 weeks. If you start with one pregnant female, within a month you could have dozens of nymphs, and within 3 to 6 months you could have hundreds to thousands of bed bugs if untreated, because each female offspring will begin laying eggs after maturing. In cooler temperatures development slows. A small infestation can become a large infestation in 2 to 4 months. This is why early detection is crucial, a few bugs can become a major problem quickly. Bed bugs do not multiply as fast without blood meals, they can survive months without feeding but will not reproduce. So regular feeding speeds multiplication, which is why they thrive in beds where hosts sleep nightly.
