Most people cannot feel bed bugs crawling on them because bed bugs are small, flat, oval insects about apple seed size that move slowly and stealthily, and they have evolved to feed unnoticed at night, injecting saliva with anesthetic properties that numbs skin so you do not feel bite initially. While they are crawling to find exposed skin, their movement is very light and most people who are asleep do not feel it, which is why bites often appear overnight without waking you. However, some people with sensitive skin or who are awake may feel a slight crawling, tickling, or itching sensation as bugs move, especially if they are moving over face or arms. After they bite, you may feel itching hours later due to allergic reaction to saliva. If you feel crawling sensations during day, it is unlikely bed bugs because they hide during day in mattress seams, box spring cracks, and headboard crevices and only come out at night between 2 AM and 5 AM to feed. Feeling of crawling can also be due to anxiety after discovering infestation, known as formication, where you feel imaginary crawling due to stress. To confirm whether crawling is bed bugs, inspect bed with flashlight at night, use interceptor traps under bed legs to catch bugs, and look for signs like dark fecal spots and rust stains. If you feel crawling at night, turn on light and inspect quickly.
