You should avoid drying clothes at night indoors for several practical and health reasons. At night, temperatures are usually cooler and there is less sunlight and natural ventilation, so clothes take much longer to dry and can remain damp for many hours, which increases the risk of musty odors, mildew, and mold growth on the fabric and in your home. The moisture released raises indoor humidity overnight while you sleep in an enclosed space, which can create condensation on windows and walls, promote dust mites and mold in bedrooms, and worsen asthma or allergies by morning. If you use a dryer or heated rack at night, it wastes energy and can be a fire hazard if left unattended while you sleep, and many energy providers charge higher rates during peak evening hours. From a superstitious or cultural perspective, in some countries there is a belief that leaving clothes outside at night invites insects, spirits, or bad luck, though this is not scientific. Practically, clothes left outside overnight can collect dew and become damp again, or get dirty from nocturnal insects and animals. Clothes dried in a dark room also do not benefit from UV light that helps kill bacteria and freshen fabric. If you must dry at night, use a well-ventilated utility room with a dehumidifier and fan, not your bedroom, and avoid leaving a dryer running while you sleep.
