You should not dry certain items in the dryer because heat and tumbling can cause damage, shrinkage, or safety hazards. Items to avoid include bras and other structured undergarments with underwire and elastic that can lose shape and elasticity in high heat, as well as delicate fabrics like silk, lace, and some wool that can shrink or become misshapen. Rubber-backed rugs and mats should not be machine dried because the backing can crumble and the rubber can overheat, creating a fire risk. Clothing with embellishments such as sequins, glued designs, or screen prints can peel or melt. Leather, faux leather, and suede can crack and warp. Activewear with high spandex content can lose stretch. Items soiled with oil, gasoline, or flammable chemicals should not be dried because residual fumes can ignite. Stuffed toys with glued parts and items with foam padding may melt. Always check care labels, and when in doubt use low heat or air dry to preserve items and avoid hazards like fire or damage to the dryer itself.
