You should avoid drying clothes inside your bedroom or small living room because it can create health, structural, and air quality problems. When wet clothes dry indoors, they release large amounts of moisture into the air, which can raise indoor humidity from a healthy 40 to 50 percent to over 60 or 70 percent. High humidity creates an ideal environment for mold, mildew, and dust mites to grow on walls, windowsills, mattresses, and inside wardrobes, which can trigger allergies, asthma, coughing, and respiratory infections. The damp smell from clothes can also make your room smell musty and lead to condensation on windows and walls that can cause paint to peel and wood to rot over time. Drying clothes in your sleeping area also releases laundry detergent and fabric softener chemicals into the air you breathe all night. For people with weakened immune systems, drying clothes indoors can increase exposure to Aspergillus fungus spores that thrive on damp clothes. Additionally, clothes dried in a crowded room dry much slower due to poor air circulation, and they can feel stiff and smell stale. If you must dry clothes indoors, use a well-ventilated room with a dehumidifier, open windows, or use a bathroom with an exhaust fan, and avoid the bedroom where you spend 6 to 8 hours breathing the damp air.
