Water can remain hard despite having a water softener due to several common mechanical or operational failures. First, the system may be completely out of salt, or a hard "salt bridge" crust may have formed inside the brine tank, preventing water from dissolving sodium to create brine. Second, the plastic resin bed inside the mineral tank may be fouled by iron, silt, or degraded by high chlorine levels, rendering it unable to capture calcium ions. Third, the internal bypass valve may be stuck open, routing hard water directly into your home. Verification: Test your water hardness with a test strip and check the brine tank salt level.
