A water softener consuming salt at an abnormally rapid rate is typically caused by one of several common mechanical issues. First, salt bridging or mushing can form a hard crust inside the brine tank, preventing water from dissolving salt properly and tricking the system into excessive replenishment cycles. Second, a stuck float valve or improper timer setting can cause the system to fill the brine tank with too much water, dissolving extra salt unnecessarily. Third, frequent manual regeneration cycles or a leaking injector valve will drain salt prematurely. Verification: Inspect the inside of your brine tank for hardened salt crusts or bridge blockages.
