A standard water softener takes approximately 1.5 to 3 hours to complete a full automatic regeneration cycle and begin softening water again. During normal daily operation, however, softening occurs instantaneously the moment hard water flows through the mineral tank and makes contact with the charged resin beads. If your system is currently regenerating, any water consumed in the house will temporarily bypass the softener and run hard until the regeneration cycle finishes completely. Verification: Run a soap lather test in a clean bottle to check if indoor water suds up instantly.
