A sump pump failing to kick on when water rises in the pit is usually caused by a disconnected power supply, a tripped GFCI outlet or circuit breaker, a stuck float switch trapped against the basin wall, or a burned-out motor. If the float switch cannot move freely, the electrical circuit remains open and never signals the motor to start. Verification: Check the power plug connection, test the outlet with another device, and manually lift the float switch to test motor engagement.
