Testing your sump pump regularly ensures it will function properly during heavy storms. To test it safely, slowly pour a large five-gallon bucket of water directly into the sump pit basin. Observe the float switch as it rises with the water level; it should trigger the motor automatically once it reaches a certain height. The pump should rapidly expel the water and shut off automatically once the float drops back down to the bottom. Verification: Check that the water level drops smoothly and that the discharge pipe outside is flowing freely without leaks or blockages.
