When a sump pump runs continuously without shutting off, the problem is typically caused by a stuck or tethered float switch trapped against the basin wall, a failed internal switch mechanism, an overwhelmed pump capacity during heavy flooding, or a stuck check valve allowing discharged water to flow right back into the pit. If the float cannot drop down, the switch remains stuck in the ON position. Verification: Reach into the pit and manually adjust or free the float switch to see if the motor turns off.
