To force a sump pump to run manually for testing or emergency draining, you must manipulate the float switch mechanism. On vertical or tethered float switches, manually lift or push the float arm upward into the activation position until you hear an internal switch click and the motor engages. On electronic or pressure-diaphragm switches, check if the control box has a manual test button. Callout type="warning" title="Safety Warning": Never let the pump run completely dry for more than a few seconds, as lack of water lubrication can overheat and ruin the motor. Verification: Listen for the motor to hum and verify that water is actively discharging through the outdoor pipe.
