Many homes in North Carolina do not have full basements primarily due to regional soil conditions, high water tables, and the predominance of heavy, expansive red clay. Excavating deep subterranean basements in such terrain is extremely difficult and costly, and the high moisture levels in the soil increase the risk of chronic water seepage and foundation hydrostatic pressure, making crawl spaces or concrete slab foundations much more practical and economical.
