An unsealed, unconditioned crawl space with high relative humidity and ground moisture frequently develops mold growth over time. Because crawl spaces are naturally dark, poorly ventilated, and situated directly over damp soil, wooden framing timbers and subfloor insulation easily become breeding grounds for fungal spores if a proper polyethylene vapor barrier and commercial dehumidifier are not actively maintained to control moisture levels.
