Sleeping with scleral lenses is dangerous because the large-diameter lenses vault completely over the cornea and seal a fluid-filled reservoir against the eye surface, significantly restricting vital oxygen transmission to the corneal tissue. Overnight wear induces severe corneal hypoxia and swelling, while trapped debris or bacteria beneath the lens pool create an extremely high risk of developing microbial keratitis, corneal ulcers, and permanent vision impairment.
