Eye care professionals strongly advise against showering, swimming, or exposing rigid gas permeable (RGP) contact lenses to tap water or untreated moisture. Waterborne microorganisms, such as Acanthamoeba, can adhere to contact lenses and become trapped against the cornea, leading to severe, sight-threatening eye infections and corneal ulcers. RGP lenses should always be removed or protected prior to showering, swimming, or utilizing hot tubs to maintain optimal ocular health and hygiene.
