No, Rigid Gas Permeable (RGP) lenses are not the same as scleral lenses, although both fall under the category of hard or gas-permeable contact lenses. Traditional RGP lenses are relatively small and rest directly on the cornea, covering only a portion of the front surface of the eye. In contrast, scleral lenses possess a much larger diameter and vault completely over the cornea, resting entirely on the less sensitive conjunctiva and sclera (the white part of the eye) to create a fluid-filled reservoir for severe corneal irregularities.
