Brass fittings can still leak despite using Teflon tape due to several common installation or mechanical errors, such as applying the tape in the wrong counterclockwise direction, using too few wraps, or over-tightening the joint and shearing the tape away. Another frequent culprit is failing to clean old tape or debris from the threads before assembly, which prevents a flush connection. Additionally, if the brass fittings are tapered versus straight-threaded or have minor manufacturing imperfections, tape alone may not bridge the gap. Finally, if the fitting relies on a flared edge or internal rubber O-ring rather than pipe threads to seal, applying tape on the threads is completely ineffective and causes leaks.
