Teflon tape has an almost indefinite lifespan when installed correctly inside a closed plumbing joint, often lasting for decades without degrading. Because polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is chemically inert, waterproof, and highly resistant to temperature extremes, bacterial growth, and corrosion, it does not break down over time under normal operating conditions. However, if a plumbing joint is unscrewed or disassembled during maintenance, the old Teflon tape is compromised, shredded, or stretched, and it must always be completely removed and replaced with a fresh layer before reassembling the connection to ensure a reliable seal.
