Yes, it matters tremendously which direction you apply Teflon tape around pipe threads. The tape must always be wrapped in a clockwise direction when facing the open end of the pipe fitting. Wrapping clockwise ensures that when you screw the male fitting into the female connector, the rotational tightening motion smooths the tape down and molds it deeper into the thread grooves. If you wrap it counterclockwise, the friction of screwing the components together will immediately catch the edge of the tape, causing it to unravell, bunch up, and tear away, leaving the joint unsealed and prone to immediate water or gas leaks.
