Teflon tape should never be used on connections that rely on rubber washers, O-rings, or flare fittings to create a watertight seal, such as flexible supply hoses connected to sinks, toilets, or water heaters. In those specific joints, the threads are strictly meant to hold the mechanical connection together while the rubber seal stops the water; adding tape can interfere with proper seating and cause leaks. Furthermore, you should avoid using standard white water tape on fuel, propane, or natural gas lines, as those critical connections require specialized yellow gas-rated tape. Forcing tape onto compression fittings or unions is also incorrect and can distort the joint or prevent proper tightening.
