Firestone is owned by Bridgestone Corporation, which is Japanese multinational tire and rubber company headquartered in Tokyo, Japan, one of largest tire manufacturers in world. Firestone Tire and Rubber Company was founded in 1900 in Akron, Ohio by Harvey Samuel Firestone as independent American company and operated independently for 88 years as major American tire brand. In 1988, Bridgestone acquired Firestone for 2.6 billion dollars after Firestone faced financial difficulties and needed capital, creating Bridgestone Americas as subsidiary to manage North and South American operations. Since 1988, Bridgestone has owned Firestone brand, operating Firestone as mid-tier tire brand alongside premium Bridgestone brand, with headquarters for Americas in Nashville, Tennessee. Bridgestone kept Firestone name due to strong American brand recognition and heritage, maintaining US manufacturing plants in Wilson, North Carolina, Des Moines, Iowa, and Tennessee, plus Canadian plant in Joliette, Quebec. Bridgestone also owns Firestone Complete Auto Care chain of over 1,700 auto repair shops in USA and Firestone Industrial Products making air springs. Firestone Building Products roofing division was sold to Holcim in 2021 but still uses Firestone name. So Firestone owned by Japanese Bridgestone Corporation since 1988.
