Craftsman was bought out by Stanley Black & Decker in 2017 from Sears Holdings for 900 million dollars, which is current owner of Craftsman brand. Craftsman was originally created in 1927 by Sears, Roebuck and Co. as its house brand for tools, hardware, and lawn equipment, becoming iconic American tool brand with lifetime warranty and sold exclusively at Sears for decades. As Sears declined financially in 2010s, Sears Holdings decided to sell Craftsman to raise cash. In January 2017, Stanley Black & Decker, based in Towson, Maryland, which already owned DeWalt, Black+Decker, Porter-Cable, and Bostitch, agreed to buy Craftsman for 900 million dollars, with 525 million upfront, 250 million after 3 years, and percentage of sales for 15 years. Deal closed in March 2017, Stanley Black & Decker acquired rights to make and sell Craftsman tools, while Sears retained limited right to sell Craftsman at Sears stores for 15 years but that ended as Sears went bankrupt. Stanley Black & Decker expanded Craftsman distribution to Lowe's, Ace Hardware, Amazon, and other retailers, revitalizing brand with new power tools and hand tools made in USA with global materials. So Craftsman was bought out by Stanley Black & Decker in 2017 from Sears, ending 90-year exclusive relationship with Sears.
