Which is better, acrylic or alkyd, depends on application, surface, and desired properties. Acrylic paint is water based, low odor, fast drying, easy cleanup with water, flexible, resists cracking, retains color well, and is more environmentally friendly with low VOCs, making it better for interior walls, exterior house siding, and DIY due to easy use and quick recoat. Alkyd paint is oil based or modified oil that cures harder, smoother, more durable, with better flow and leveling, making it better for trim, cabinets, doors, and high wear areas where hard glossy finish is desired and for metal. However, alkyd has strong odor, slow drying, requires mineral spirits for cleanup, yellows over time, especially in low light, and has higher VOCs. For interior walls, acrylic is generally better due to low odor and flexibility. For trim and cabinets where hard durable finish needed, many still prefer alkyd or waterborne alkyd hybrid for better leveling. Modern waterborne alkyds combine benefits of both. So acrylic is better for walls, exterior, and easy use, alkyd is better for hard durable enamel finish on trim and metal, though waterborne alkyd hybrids are now popular as compromise.
