Difference between alkyd and latex paint is mainly base, durability, drying, and cleanup. Alkyd paint is oil based or modified oil based, uses solvents like mineral spirits, cures by oxidation to hard durable glossy finish with excellent leveling and flow, making it ideal for trim, cabinets, doors, and metal, but has strong odor, slow drying 8 to 24 hours, requires mineral spirits for cleanup, yellows over time, and has higher VOCs. Latex paint is water based acrylic emulsion, uses water as solvent, dries fast 1 to 2 hours, low odor, easy cleanup with water, flexible, resists cracking and fading, retains color well, low VOCs, making it ideal for interior walls, exterior siding, and easy DIY. Latex is less hard than alkyd but more flexible. Alkyd provides harder, smoother finish, latex is more breathable and environmentally friendly. Modern waterborne alkyd hybrids combine alkyd resins with water base for easy cleanup and hard finish. So alkyd is oil based hard enamel, latex is water based flexible wall paint, alkyd better for trim and high wear, latex better for walls and exterior due to ease and low odor.
