What to do with pillows during fumigation? Pillows can generally stay inside during whole-house fumigation because fumigant gas needs to penetrate them to kill bed bugs or other pests hiding inside. Remove pillowcases and any plastic or waterproof protectors that would block gas, and leave pillows loose on bed or standing up to allow gas circulation. Do not seal pillows in airtight plastic bags during fumigation, as that prevents gas from entering. After fumigation and after the home is cleared for re-entry and ventilated, you should air pillows outside for a few hours if possible, then wash pillowcases and any removable covers in hot water and dry on high heat. For foam or memory foam pillows that cannot be washed, vacuum them and let them air out. If you are sensitive or have infants, you may want to wash even the pillows if washable, or replace them. For drywood termite fumigation only, some companies say pillows are fine without washing, but washing provides extra peace of mind, especially for children.
