Can bed bugs survive fumigation? Bed bugs can survive fumigation if it is not done correctly, but whole-structure fumigation with sulfuryl fluoride like Vikane is one of the few treatments that can kill all life stages including eggs when done properly. Success depends on proper dosage, exposure time, temperature, and sealing of the structure. Bed bugs hide deep in cracks, inside walls, mattresses, and furniture, so gas must penetrate everywhere for 20 to 72 hours. If the tent has leaks, gas concentration drops, or exposure time is too short, some eggs or adults deep inside thick materials may survive. Also, spot fumigation or using foggers from hardware store, often called bug bombs, will not kill bed bugs and can scatter them deeper into walls. Professional heat treatment combined with residual insecticides often has higher success than fumigation alone for bed bugs. Even after successful fumigation, reinfestation can occur if you bring back infested items. So yes they can survive improper fumigation, but proper Vikane fumigation kills them.
