What to do with a mattress during fumigation? What to do with a mattress during fumigation depends on type of fumigation. For whole-house tent fumigation for termites or bed bugs with Vikane gas, you can leave the mattress inside the house because the gas will penetrate it and kill pests inside, including bed bugs and eggs. Leave bedding off, stand mattress on its side or lean it against wall to expose both sides, and remove waterproof or plastic covers that block gas penetration. Do not seal mattress in plastic during fumigation because gas cannot get in. For bed bug heat treatment or chemical spray, mattress is often treated separately, encased after treatment, and left in place. For localized fumigation or if you are concerned about chemical absorption, ask company, but most allow mattress to stay. After fumigation and aeration, air out mattress for several hours, vacuum it, and put clean bedding on. If mattress is heavily infested, torn, or old, professionals may recommend discarding it after wrapping in plastic.
