Can I leave my refrigerator on during fumigation? You should turn off or unplug your refrigerator during whole-house tent fumigation if your fumigation company instructs you to, and most companies require refrigerators and freezers to be left on but with specific preparation, so instructions vary. Some companies tell you to leave refrigerator running to keep sealed food cold, but to remove or Nylofume bag all food inside, including in freezer, because gas can permeate. Others tell you to unplug refrigerator and leave doors open to allow gas penetration and to avoid damage to compressor from being sealed under tarp in heat. The critical safety issue is pilot lights, sparks, and electronics, not the fridge motor itself, but fridges can have relays that spark. If you leave it on under hot tent, heat can damage it and food will spoil anyway if tent heats. Best practice is to empty refrigerator of all food, unplug it, and leave doors open, or follow company sheet that says leave it plugged but emptied and bagged. Ask your fumigator, as requirements differ by chemical and tent type.
