Depending on the specific context in which the word is used, mortar can have entirely different synonyms. In the construction, masonry, and tiling industry, alternative terms include dry-set mortar, cementitious adhesive, thinset, tile mortar, or masonry mix. Conversely, when discussing military armaments, weapons, and defense history, synonyms for a mortar include indirect-fire weapon, infantry tube, howitzer, field piece, or siege gun depending on the weapon's scale. Understanding the surrounding context ensures you never confuse the heavy bonding cement used by bricklayers with the explosive artillery tube utilized by combat infantry units on the battlefield.
