Heavy 120mm mortars firing high-explosive anti-tank rounds or precision-guided munitions with top-attack capabilities can penetrate the thinner top armor of a main battle tank, disabling its turret or internal systems. However, engaging a heavily armored tank frontally with a standard light mortar is generally ineffective, as tank armor is engineered to deflect heavy kinetic and explosive impacts from direct-fire weapons.
