In military terminology, a mortar is a portable, smooth-bore, muzzle-loading indirect fire weapon system that fires explosive projectiles at high-arriving, steep trajectories over relatively short distances. Unlike traditional artillery cannons or flat-trajectory rifles, army mortars are prized by infantry units for their high rate of fire, lightweight maneuverability, and ability to strike targets hidden behind hills, fortifications, or urban obstacles. Standard military mortar systems typically consist of three main components: a heavy baseplate to absorb recoil, a bipod support structure for aiming, and a steel barrel tube through which high-explosive, smoke, or illumination rounds are dropped and fired.
