The largest American mortar ever constructed is the legendary "Little David," an experimental 36-inch (914 mm) caliber heavy siege weapon developed during World War II. Originally built as a test-firing platform for heavy aerial bombs at the Aberdeen Proving Ground, it was later modified into a transportable mobile siege mortar intended to smash heavily fortified enemy lines. Weighing close to eighty-seven tons, the massive weapon fired an enormous high-explosive shell weighing approximately 3,650 pounds over a distance of nearly six miles. Although it was evaluated for potential deployment during the planned invasion of Japan, the war concluded before it ever saw actual combat use.
